Diabetic

It has been 10 days since I have written anything in my blog. I am so sorry to all my readers but it has been a bad 10 days at that. I knew sooner or later that ugly word of Diabetes or being a Diabetic would come up. Yes you guessed it! I have been fighting my blood sugars again. You know it not just the disease itself, but also everything that goes along with being sick. I pay for meds only for them to be changed to something else with all the cost coming from my pocket. I have fallen off the horse as they call it this week. I am so mad at the world and at me. I must get this under control.

The other day the doctor order my meds but prescribe the wrong needles to use with the type of pens that I use. So the mistake was passed on to me to purchase the needles the second time. And then there’s the taking of blood sugars before meals adjust insulin take insulin (hope I get it right) and then eat. What about the times when you just plain forget to take you blood sugars?

When I run I take my blood sugars before and after the run so I can have a log. A lot of the time my sugars will be to low because I haven’t eaten dinner before I run. So I end up pushing my blood sugars out the roof for the run just to see them drop during the run. I am so sorry about all this rant but I am trying to understand this thing called diabetes.

Yesterday I talked with a Dietitian and Health Educator hoping that they could push me in the right way. Wow, I soon learn that $180 – $220 per month was not something I could afford. So today I am back on the internet trying to educate myself as much as possible. If anyone knows of a website with such info please let me know.

My running partner has manage to keep me running but at a very reduce pace. It is just so hard to run when you are tired.

Thanks Guys for listening to me and I hope that the next post will be better.

Remember Keep Running!

Easter Weekend I was Running

Yes, you heard me right…I was running on easter weekend.  I ran my longest mileage to date on Sunday. 4.01 miles plus I put in a 1 mile cool doFullSizeRender (3)wn jog. I was a good day. The weather was a little on the misty side with a little rain here and there. But once we got started running we were off for a good run. Injections has been controlling my blood sugars but today I started off with a reading of 233 before my run and a reading of 109 afterwards. I am determined to control my sugars with exercise alone.

Sunday’s run was uneventful. There were no pains noted, legs felt good and strong, should were rested and not tight, feet was awesome. I still had to do some run / walk to finish the 4 miles. I did however have some lower back pain during the last 50 yards maybe. The pain wasn’t strong or intense, but I could tell it was there.

I really do love running and I can tell it is good for me after the run is over. But I must admit it is hard to get myself out there to began with.

I really love all the comments I have been getting and the followers that have come on board with my journey. I will reply to all comments as fast as time allows. So for now remember….Keep Running!

Welcome to DiabeticRunning

Why at 55 years of age, would a man start running you may ask? After a terrible motor vehicle accident in October 2012, I found myself looking for a lot of answers.  I had a lot of trauma to my body and that just threw my body into shock.  Just to list a few problems… I had a internal head injury, Fracture my chest in three places, contused lungs, contused heart, With time in the hospital I began to recover. But not without problems! I was now faced with having seizures for the first time in my life. Due to all the trauma that my body had endured my blood pressure began to spike and I began having problem with elevated blood sugars.

I was determine to take back control of my life but things/life was changing by the day. I no longer could hold down my job as a truck driver. Funny thing is our Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not want me driving due to the seizures. Everything has it’s pros and cons. Due to being confined to home the rest of my body didn’t want to play well so my Blood Sugars went out the roof. My doctor said running would possibly help with the seizures and would also the high blood sugar and blood pressure. The first Pro… I began to run. The first Con you ask? When you run and have seizures sooner or later you will have a seizure while running! Second Con…When you have a seizure while running you fall down and that never a good thing. I have been picked up by Emergency Medical Services many times on the greenway here in my hometown of Charlotte, NC.

Having said all of that, it brings me to the real story of here and now. Since I began to run I’ve run some and stop, run some and stop. I love running but I am afraid of having seizures during a run or having my blood sugar to drop to low. I signed up with a local running group called Run For Your Life (RFYL) Wow, what a group of amazing people. They have help me in so many ways learning to run at a older age. My dream now has always been to run a full Marathron! Yes, you heard me right a FULL 26.2 miles Marathron. Since the wreck the only thing preventing this is my health. Now at the beginning of 2016 my blood sugar is getting the best of me. I struggle daily with readings in the 400 to 500+ range. My doctor has taken me off some of my meds and now has started injections up to 5 per day. I can see my dreams going down the tube quick.

Let the training began! So I will be logging my daily activities as I began my training for the Niagara Falls Marathon. Check it out here! On October 30, 2016 I will be in the Niagara Falls Marathon that will start in Buffalo, New York and end at the Niagara Falls on the Canada side.
